Finish

Concrete effect plaster.

The look of poured concrete on a wall that could never carry it. Cool, flat, quietly industrial.

01 What it is

What concrete effect plaster actually is

Concrete effect is built with either a lime or a cement-based system depending on the room, worked to leave the tonal variation, pour lines and occasional blemish that make real concrete look like concrete. The mistake most people make is going too even. Actual concrete is patchy, and a wall that is perfectly uniform reads as grey paint.

02 Where it works

Where concrete effect plaster belongs

Apartment interiors, warehouse and mill conversions, bathrooms, kitchens, commercial receptions, and any room where the joinery is doing enough work already. It sits well against timber, brass and exposed brick. In a wet area we build it in microcement so it can be sealed properly.

How it goes on

Base coats, then the finish worked in passes with deliberate variation, and sealed to suit the room. The tonal range is agreed on a sample panel first, because the difference between convincing and flat is a decision made before we start rather than an accident of application.

Our own projects, photographed on site. Not every photograph on this page is this finish — the gallery is grouped by project and says which is which.

04 Questions

Common questions about concrete effect plaster

Is this the same as microcement?
It can be built in microcement, particularly in a bathroom or on a floor. On a dry feature wall it can also be built in lime, which breathes. The choice depends on the room, not on the look.
Can it go on a floor?
Yes, built in microcement with a floor-grade sealer and a substrate that does not move.
Will it look like grey paint?
Only if it is applied badly. The variation is the finish. We agree the tonal range on a sample panel before anything goes on your wall.
05 Where we work

Concrete effect plaster across the UK

Our studio is in Birmingham. These are the cities we are asked for this in most often, and each has its own page.
