Moroccan lime, burnished with a stone and sealed with soap. Genuinely waterproof, completely seamless, and there is nothing else quite like it.
Tadelakt is a lime plaster compressed with a smooth stone and then treated with olive-oil soap. The soap reacts with the lime to close the surface completely, which is what makes it waterproof rather than merely water-resistant. It was developed for Moroccan bathhouses, so its whole purpose is standing water and steam. The surface is soft, slightly undulating and warm to look at, quite unlike tile.
The lime for this comes from Zavoré, who carry the full range of Italian lime plasters we work in.
Wet rooms, showers, bathrooms, steam rooms, basins and baths, and increasingly whole bathroom walls where somebody has decided they never want to look at a grout line again. It is also correct on old buildings, because it remains a lime finish and the wall behind it can still breathe.
It is the slowest finish we do and the most skill-dependent. Coats are built, compressed with a stone at exactly the right moment as the lime sets, then soaped and burnished again. Get the timing wrong and it will not close. There is no shortcut and no product that does it for you, which is why very few contractors offer it properly.
